There's a lot of threads about David Packer and the tragic event on 10/30/1982 on the IMDb boards for Dominique, David and V the miniseries. Mostly calling him a coward, a few defending him. I'm on the "he's a coward" side. He did not do enough to help her whatsoever. He called the wrong police department and was told it was the wrong jurisdiction (before nationwide 911 systems were in affect), then called a friend instead of trying to get a hold of the cops. I read somewhere he actually testified for Sweeney's defense. I was bored (and could not sleep early this morning) and looked him up on wikipedia. It actually says he was a "good friend" of Dominique. If he was a good friend of Dominique's, he should have of known about Sweeney's psychotic behavior from her or at least thru the grapevine. There had to been rumors since the month earlier in 9/1982, she filmed Hill Street Blues with little to no makeup required because of Sweeney attacking her. On the Ilana's V site, she had a phone interview with Packer. There was only one question about the tragedy. He said "it impacted everything", (way to make it all about yourself). Honestly I think it ruined his whole career (besides the fact he has mediocre acting skills and looks). Failed tv series, secondary and tertiary characters on various TV series and movies. I despise Packer along with Sweeney!
he testified for Sweeney's defense?? what about poor Dominique??
im happy hes a nobody today, that's his karma.
Sweeney now has to get his comeuppance since he didn't serve enough time behind bars.

If you ever are a witness to a domestic violence incidents anyone in law enforcement will tell you to yes, call 911 but to stay away physically from the altercation. Any cop will tell you that going into a domestic violence situation is one of the most dangerous possible scenarios. Unless I am missing something , he attempted to call police.

So here's some food for thought:
David Packer went to Dominique's house that night to rehearse lines with her for the 'V' miniseries.
John Sweeney went to Dominique's house that night to kill her, which he did.
Which person is in the wrong?

I also do not blame Packer. Sweeney was physically imposing and Packer was a young twink. David, according to Dominque's father was at the hospital the next day, eyes swollen from crying. Sweeney killed Dominque, not David. I do of course wish that Packer had grabbed a knife from the kitchen, or the nearest blunt object and confronted Sweeney, but the sounds outside must have terrified him.

For those of you who think he did the right thing you are fools. You cannot just allow someone to die. This is why schools and police have had to revamp how they handle school shootings. The police and school administrations taught you hide and be defensive. That had proven to be ineffective. You make a stand. Here is the reality.. He might have been hurt but a man stands up for what is right. A coward hides. I have served my country and know what fear is. That fear never made me cower and hide. His hiding should have put him behind bars too. If anyone disagrees I ask what you would think about him if she was tour daughter.

The 911 dispatcher herself told him to go out and do something-she said if he were a man he'd go. Yes, he did the right thing calling the cops first. But the cos were there in minutes. Sweeney was a bigger stronger man, but he he was after poor Dominique. Packer was healthy and young. He could have delayed Sweeney. Yes he probably would have taken a beating, but he would have lived and so would the poor girl!

Of course you'd want him to sacrifice his life if need be to save YOUR daughter. But Dominique was Dominick Dunne's daughter and he (as far as I know) didn't condemn Packer, other than to say he called the police "too late". I can't judge Packer's state of mind that governed his actions; to each his own, but I will comment on your observation about school shootings. I work in a public middle school, and the advisories are still to find a place to shelter and hide; in fact, not to open the door even for a fleeing student on the other side (there is a BIT of a gray area there, and every employee I've talked about this to--except one--agrees that we couldn't leave a student locked out to die) "Making a stand" is solely for when you're cornered by the shooter and literally have nowhere to run; then it's fight like an animal, no holds barred, jam a pencil in his eye, etc. |
